Her background is in ornithology, writing, and science communication. Instructor Lauren Smith joined ORI in 2021 as the Director of Communications. She shares her passion for field biology, natural history, and long-term research through public speaking, scientific papers, and bringing the public into the field to observe research in action. ![]() Her research, focused primarily on North American owls, has afforded her the opportunity to travel and work throughout western Montana, Alaska, and Wyoming. Instructor Beth Mendelsohn earned her graduate degree from the University of Wyoming with an emphasis on great gray owl genetics. This guided owl walk will provide information about their biology, habitats, and behaviors as well as tips on where and when to go owling on your own. Owls as seldom-seen residents of the night, inspire wonder, awe, and our imagination when we catch a glimpse or hear a mating duet in the woods. Lauren Smith and Beth Mendelsohn will also share information collected from Owl Research Institute’s studies in the area.
